How do horses sleep standing up?
THE EQUINE STAY APPARATUS
In my junior year at Centenary University, I studied and sculpted major anatomical structures of the equine musculoskeletal system. I donated this sculpture to my university’s equestrian center.
Horses can sleep standing up because of a locking mechanism in their hind legs involving their patellar ligaments and stifle joints. The other muscles in this sculpture support the horse’s trunk, head, neck, ribs, and limbs.
